Are you planning on ever selling the Carrot deck? It is aesthetiqué af and every time I see it I mentally do a lil grabby hands
thinkin’ about it. i just need to figure out the logistics. glad you like it!
more Carot cards, this time from the Traveler’s Suite. Carot is a simple ttrpg where you and your opponent play as the travelers you pull from the deck as well as the world that wants to absolutely wreck them. each side represents a different rabbit family and each family has a litter of 4 kits. the game is a journey of a year where both litters go out traveling, and the goal is to get as many of your siblings back home as possible while trying to use nature and circumstance to merc your opponent’s bloodline. you play 4 seasons, a season for each rabbit, and these seasons are like short stories of what happens when you and your opponent’s traveler meet on the road.
games can also be totally friendly collaborative stories, but y’know. rabbits.
even though you play with 4 traveler cards each, there are 10 in all to choose from in a deck. here are 6 of those cards because i still need to finish the rest but i really wanted to post something for the first day of spooky month. these are like the standard/classic designs you’d see on cards but there are variations all over the place because rabbits sometimes make personal decks to play with.
if you were into shady divination stuff these are the ones you would use though.
not that anyone on the island is doing that.
ahem.
here are some rough descriptions of each one:
I understand the first names, but how are the family names picked? Or- I guess, what types of names are they? I don't know how to ask, but all I can understand is that existential means dark words related to death and similar?
pretty much. the words don’t have to be particularly dark either, more like they’re dark in the context of always relating to the many moods/actions/vibes that lead to death. so a last name can be Folly, or Hubris, but it can also be something like Indulgence, Revelry, Despondence, Exhaustion, Completion, Spite, Time, ect.
some last names kind of bleed into first name territory and you get a vulture equivalent of John Johnson such as Old-Age Time, but that’s normal.
This nice leucistic turkey vulture lady is doing some arts and crafts! Her name is Ms. Grain-Entrapment Irony, according to traditional vulture naming conventions.
She’s my half of an art trade with @theveryworstthing! Her vultures (and other Rabbits of Downtrodden drawings) were my very first introduction to her art, and it was love at first sight. Please follow her for some peerless creature/character design, if you aren’t already!
excellent vulture 10/10!!!! vultures and rabbits alike love good beadwork, so she’s probably very popular. i love her dappled pattern and her cute little craft box that is perfectly color coordinated with her outfit.
thank you so much for the trade!
i haven’t answered these in a while and diving into my inbox would take 20 years off my life span but here’s some i saw at the top.

there are no dogs in the downtrodden world. some mainlanders kinda look like dogs, but really they’re just layering different critter attributes on coyote or other wild canine models. rabbits only have attributes from a mix of domesticated and wild irl rabbits because they’re Weird (and also i like having a bunch of design aspects to choose from).
wolves actually used to be ‘domesticated’ back when they lived with other rabbits. sidenote, there are no such things as the wolves we know on the island. all wolves are rabbits with a recessive gene that triggers the transformation into a wolf. some rabbits with the gene transform so slowly that they just get really tall over the course of their lives and end up with weird teeth. some can control it, switching back and forth at whim (this was what most of the old wolves did). some get stuck in a cycle where they’re constantly, slowly, turning from form to form, and some turn once and are wolves forever. a lot of rabbits actually have this gene, it just never triggers transformation in most people for whatever reason.
My oc got the black moon and the cocoon! Rhyming signs!
cute! also now is the time for anyone with a downtrodden oc to jump in this thread and tell me their birth signs. please, PLEASE include the ways they badly fit said signs.
it’s time for part 2 of the zodiac based Carot cards. Horn cards are horizontal instead of vertical because they’re meant to be placed above the three other suites which lay side by side. the last two suites are tentatively named the Travelers and the Island and now that i know what direction i want to take with them i’ll hopefully get through those in between work. anyway, here’s some lore.
Horn Signs
Horn signs are the second half of the rabbit/hare zodiac system. When a rabbit or hare is born they have sharp little starter horns encased in rubbery membranes that fall off soon after birth. These horns will eventually shed in a process similar to teething when they get older, but before that they’re basically baby’s first shank. A nasty natural surprise for any predator looking for an easy meal or any parent who gets too tired to keep track of the pointy bits on their child.
Your horn sign correlates to how many points your birth horns had. Again, no one takes this seriously lest people start catching their death of prophesy. But since horn points are the way that many parents initially tell kits apart in litters where they look very similar, it’s fun to joke about.
The Horn Suite
i won’t be posting all the Carot cards because 1. they’re still not all done and 2. i might sell them in one big pack as physical cards? jury’s still out on that. i will post the first two suites though because they tie into the rabbit zodiac and i can write about that bit separately!
Litter Signs
Litter signs are the first half in the rabbit/hare zodiac system. No one believes the zodiac. No one even knows where it comes from. It’s fun to talk about for jokes and it plays into Carot games but rabbits are very averse to anything prophetic and foretelling personality traits by the order a baby shoots out of you is. A. No. You start doing that shit and the universe takes notice and wants to play along. Starts sending vague visions to randos about possible futures and such. Horrible. No thanks. Maybe you’re cool with the universe writing bad fanfiction about your future and trying to trap you into acting it out, but not rabbits.
the black moon: sign of the first born. experimentation, excitement, and curiosity. a fool who rushes in and a scout who tests the water for others.
it’s my birthday so have what would be my litter sign/moon sign card from the Carot deck i’m working on.
don’t have the energy for a full lore post but it’s been so long since the last one that i wanted to do something. so even though i’m still hazy on names, designs, and even genders for most of them, have some villains!
the trio up top are, from left to right: a con artist/makeup guru/very likely serial killer ‘beast tamer’, one of the children of the most reviled leader of the most reviled bandit hare caravan called The Snares who has big dreams of becoming a necromancy wielding cult leader (they are well on their way), and a mainlander lady who serves as a liaison between the gang and potential buyers of their black market wares who has very morbid interests.
The Snares get by on wrecking other hare caravans, extortion, person trafficking, ect. but most of their real money comes from moving large predator carcasses. furs, bones, feathers, you name it. if it comes from something big and dangerous you go to them to get it. They have some pretty sweet black market shipments coming from the island and actually have quite a few amazing taxidermy artists that can turn a rotting wolf into something trophy-worthy if given enough time. they even make their own creatures, grafting bits together from different animals to make one of a kind finds for their clients.
nothing is better than their foxes though.
once again it is the downtrodden answer times. i haven’t done one of these in a while so i i just grabbed the first few from my inbox because holy crap y’all have a lot of questions. thank you for your interest!
now let’s get to it.
hello everyone, here are some very rough sketches of hare Messenger/caravan friends. i wanna draw more of these because i’ve finally settled on a general design and now i’m ready to get wacky with them.
but first.
it is time for lore.
this isn’t everything i want to say about hares and caravans and their relationship with rabbits and the above ground world but i figure it’s a start. so welcome to Hare Caravans: a short history intertwined with landscaping and postal work.
The beginnings of a journey: staying above ground where all the things that want to kill you are is good actually.
The first hare leveret was born at about the same time as the first rabbit kit. Some say that the two litters were only a nest apart, or that they were even reared together. No one is quite sure of the exact times and distances though because the only people there were the Mothers, who are all gone now, and a few couple minute old gods, who while gods, were just dumb babies who had no idea that any of this would ever matter in the future.
The main thing of importance is that in the beginning there were rabbits and hares in the same general area dealing with the same general existence bullshit and for some reason instead of wising up and going underground like the rabbits, the hares decided (in what had to be a blinding species-wide wave of spite and wanderlust because let’s be real they are EVEN TWITCHIER than rabbits) to stay above ground, learn to do sick stunts, and make the world Deal With Them.
i have a guide for y’all today.
How To Prepare A Rabbit. A Simple And Peaceful Guide To Traditional Island Funerals As Led By Vultures Respectful Of Rabbit Culture With Perfect Customer Service Records Pertaining To Never Being Cursed Or Tortured By Vengeful Restless Spirits.
The Body Is Found.
A crowded bedside, an open field, inside a room who’s door was still rusted shut until we broke it down how in the world did they get in there??? Somewhere on the island, a rabbit’s body is found and sometimes they are attended to by vultures. Some vultures prepare the dead a little differently, but these are the steps taken by senior priestesses Fifteen-Stab-Wounds and Irresponsible Botany and so are nearly identical to traditional rabbit-led funeral customs.
You’ll know when we get to the bit rabbits usually don’t do.
i would love to but it feels so unfinished atm. i know that’s hard to believe considering the wild amount of worldbuilding i’ve done, but there are still so many gaps a wanna fill. i have thought about doing smaller zines/books based around specific topics though. it could be interesting to do a lavishly illustrated zine about the different lives of the royals, wolf stuff, or historical magic usage.
i gotta organize some Downtrodden posts soon. i’ve been consumed by the Plague Saga game writing/art and its made it difficult to tear myself away and make time for more worldbuilding posts. which would be fine if the worldbuilding stopped…building. i have so many new things to say about historical mainland rabbit cults and mainlander burial rituals and naming conventions and hare society and the whole weird deal around snake magic and snake culture in general and its just a lot.
i still have freelance/commission stuff to do and i’m too deep in this game to really slow down but i gotta make time if i don’t want all this crap to build to the point where its a pain to write it all up nicely.
so. for the few of you still here for rabbits, look forward to that.
